About Consumer Protection

The Consumer Protection Department enforces Parts VI (Section 55 to 70 - Consumer Welfare) of the Act. The core function of the department is to investigate complaints relating to false and misleading representations, unconscionable conduct, Supply of unsafe goods, defective goods and unsuitable goods, failure to comply with prescribed Consumer Product Safety Standards and failure to comply with prescribed Product Information Standards. Other roles of the department include; Promoting the creation of consumer bodies (CB) and establishment of standards to be followed by the CBs, recognizing/working together consumer bodies duly registered under the appropriate national Laws, making available to consumers information and guidelines relating to the obligation of persons and the rights and remedies available under the Act.
